Rooney blow for United

Despite a ninth successive clean sheet in Wednesday night's 1-0 Barclays Premier League win over Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford, Ferguson has a few injury concerns going into the match with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

In attack, Rooney will be missing for three weeks. The England striker was only on the pitch for six minutes but it was long enough to do Wigan enough damage to consign them to only a second defeat in eight matches as he tapped home Cristiano Ronaldo's first-minute cross."Wayne scored a good goal but he will be out for about three weeks now. Hopefully it is no longer," said Ferguson.

Meanwhile, Carlos Tevez is a major doubt after limping out of a challenge by Titus Bramble.

But it is defence where United could be stretched the most. Already without Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, the Red Devils could be missing Jonny Evans at the Reebok Stadium too after the Northern Ireland star suffered an injury that left him struggling to complete the full 90 minutes.

Thank goodness for Nemanja Vidic then. As Ferguson pointed out, the Serbian's defensive masterclass bore comparison with any rival.

Absolutely superb

"Nemanja was magnificent," said Ferguson.

"It was the best performance you are likely to see from a natural centre-half.

"His reading of the game is excellent and he is as tough as nails. He was absolutely superb."

A win at Bolton will be enough for United to leapfrog leaders Liverpool, who do not tackle Everton until Monday night.

Like Ferguson, Wigan manager Steve Bruce has doubts over his personnel for Saturday's encounter with Manchester City at Eastlands.

However, Bruce's fears concern the sale of Honduran midfielder Wilson Palacios, who was the subject of a £10m bid from Tottenham Hotspur that was instantly rejected.

Bruce feels Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp will not give in easily and is realistic enough to know it may be impossible for the Latics to hang on to the 20-year-old.

"In two years' time Wilson will be as good a midfielder as there is," said Bruce.

"We will have to see what develops in the next 24 or 48 hours and what Tottenham are prepared to go to.

"The thing is when they agree to come to Wigan we sell these lads a dream. I have been there myself. How do you deny someone like that?"

Torres: Man Utd title favourites

Torres' Reds currently sit top of the Barclays Premier League but United enhanced their credentials with a 3-0 demolition of title rivals Chelsea last weekend.

United can move above Liverpool in the table if they win their two matches this week against Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers- and Torres accepts their arch-rivals are now in the driving seat.

"They're the clear favourites to win the title," said Torres. "We're working hard to compete with them and finish above them and we're on course to achieve that.

"We know it's possible for us to win this season but we have to fight to the very end to do so.

Best players

"It's obvious that we know all about them. They are the champions of Europe and the world.

"We know the class they have in their team. They have some of the best players in the world."

Torres, who finished third to United star Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the FIFA World Player of the Year award on Monday, admits the showdown between the two clubs at Old Trafford on 14th March could prove decisive.

"I think the game at Old Trafford will decide the title," noted Torres. "If everything goes as we expect then we will go there in a similar position to now.

"We will have to play our game to try and get a result in a ground, which in the last few years has not been good for Liverpool."

Kranjcar capable of more

Tony Adams is urging Niko Kranjcar to rediscover his form as Portsmouth ponder a new contract for the Croatian.

Kranjcar, 24, rose to prominence for Portsmouth last season - scoring five goals and making a vital contribution from midfield to attract admiring glances from a number of rival Barclays Premier League managers.

Adams is hoping to tie the playmaker to an improved long-term deal at Fratton Park - but admits he expects more from Kranjcar as the FA Cup holders defend their trophy in their third-round replay at Bristol City on Tuesday evening.

tremendous player

Adams said: "Niko can do better. He knocked in a few last season but has not scored since he was a 'super-sub' a couple of months ago.

"I expect more from my great players, and Niko is certainly one of them. I want to stretch my players, always push them - I think he is someone who needs that.

"He is a tremendous player, fantastic with the ball at his feet and great to watch - but he needs to keep delivering."
